By using strong texts and rhythms that are typical of Latin music, especially from Mexico, Eleazar Cortés has created a collection that gives Spanish-speaking people a unique voice in the liturgy. The easy-to-learn songs in Somos la Iglesia (We are the Church) include eight responsorial psalm settings; music for Quinceañeras; seasonal and funeral psalms; wedding songs; and songs for gathering, communion, Easter Vigil and other celebrations in parish life.

Written specifically as a responsorial psalm, “Abres Tú la Mano, Señor” exhibits the huapango rhythm, which is very common for musicians who are familiar with Mexican folklore. For the communal celebration of baptism of children, Eleazar’s “Respuesta al Bautismo” can serve as the assembly’s response to the rite of pouring water on the head of the children being baptized.

Scriptural, seasonal, liturgical and ritual/topical indexes in the back of the songbook make it especially easy to choose songs for specific moments, Masses and more. If you’re looking for music to bring your Spanish-speaking community together, look no further than Eleazar’s inspiring Somos la Iglesia.
