OCTAVO SPOTLIGHT
Through Whom All Things Were Made
Robert G. Farrell
A pulsating organ accompaniment provides the foundation for this stately SATB choral anthem. Drawing its lyrics from the The Book of Common Prayer, it touches on topics of creation, discipleship, Christian life and—lasting just under three minutes—can be effectively used at multiple places in the liturgy. The text’s petition to “Open our eyes to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works” is musically portrayed by ascending scalar melodies, and an expressive modulation from F major to A major for the last eight measures—as if the prayers were reaching upward toward Heaven.
