How Far Is It to Bethlehem

Christopher Walker

STOWEY, a traditional English folk song, is often paired with these lyrics by Frances Chesterton, which offer a charming, childlike depiction of the Nativity (also appropriate for Epiphany). Here, it is skillfully arranged for two-part treble choir (with descant on the third verse). While the piece can be sung as written—unison first verse with a short solo followed by additional vocal harmonies on verses 2 and 3—there are also instrumental doubling options for the vocal harmonies if it the choir wishes to present a unison anthem. The lilting, triple meter of the keyboard accompaniment works equally well for both piano and organ.
