A Modern Medieval Carol
Using a relatively modern text from the 1830s that combines Latin and English (a common feature of medieval English carols), Mawby has created an evocative musical setting appropriate for more advanced choral groups. Open sonorities, modal chord progressions, and characteristic metrical shifts evoke the medieval period, whereas dotted rhythms reminiscent of instrumental fanfares and a fully realized SATB choral texture lend a veneer of modernity.
