With five Unity Awards, a handful of impressive CDs and multiple World Youth Days on his resume, Santiago Fernández is one of Catholic music’s most popular Spanish and bilingual composers. Released on the Spirit & Song label, Un Canto Nuevo (A new song) is a delicious combination of danceable Latin rhythms and strong Spanish lyrics.

Of the 12 original songs, seven have Scripture-based texts. Intended for use by assemblies and contemporary ensembles, the songs feature accessible, singable melodies and refrains. Prominent themes include evangelization, thanksgiving, trust and comfort, Christian life, and hope.

International in flavor, the album features a number of well-known Latin rhythms: the complex, Flamenco-style rhumba, Colombia’s famous cumbia, the Cuban bolero and the lively and joyful merengue, with origins in the Dominican Republic.

Based on Psalm 98, the festive title track features rhumba rhythms and amazing Latin trumpets and guitars. Arranged for mandolin, Latin percussion, and 12-string, acoustic and electric guitars, “Vamos a Casa” (Psalm 122) makes a great gathering song for contemporary Masses.

“Junto a Mí” captures God’s loving, forgiving embrace, as described in the story of the Prodigal Son, with accordion and lively cumbia rhythms. If there was ever a fiesta in heaven over a repentant sinner, this is it!

Santiago wrote “Señor, Aquí Estoy” (Lord, here I am) for his godfather Francisco, who died of cancer in 2005. The song became Francisco’s daily prayer during the last three months of his life.

Un Canto Nuevo will bless and delight Spanish-speaking youth and young adults, and all who worship with contemporary Spanish music.
