Bio

James Denman was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from San Francisco State University and the DMA degree from the University of Washington, where he was the recipient of both scholarship and performance awards. His training has included study with organists Alexander Post, Carole Terry, Marie-Claire Alain and Naji Hakim, composers Herbert Bielawa and Gerald Kechley, and conductors David Cassel and Abraham Kaplan.

Prior to joining OCP’s recordings department, he served on the music faculty of Seattle Pacific University and later as adjunct faculty at Willamette University and Linfield College. He is active as a recitalist, conductor, composer and scholar, specializing in musical styles of 20th-century Paris, especially the music of Jehan Ariste Alain (1911-1940). He has presented lectures, recitals and papers for meetings of such organizations as the Society for Music Theory, the College Music Society, and the University of Michigan and San Anselmo Organ Festivals. He is published by OCP and Church Publishing, Inc. and his compositions include “At the Lamb’s High Feast” and “Adam Lay Ybounden (Settings I and II).”
