Cyprian has created a brilliant new musical setting of Luke's familiar infancy narrative. "What I have always loved about the Gospel of Luke," he explains in the program notes, "is that everyone seems to burst into song. There is a tradition that Luke may have been an artist, perhaps even the first iconographer, since he paints such stunning tableaus with his words, but most assuredly he was a poet and singer. That was my first inspiration to write The Song of Luke."

So he decided write an oratorio based on the Gospels for the Christmas cycle and to tie them together with the great canticles so that they could be performed together as a program. The Song of Luke is an oratorio "in the earliest sense of the term": An extended setting of a religious libretto for vocal soloists, chorus and instruments, for performance either in concert or in church. Cyprian gives each of the principal characters a certain voice, dance and instrument: the oboe for Mary, the bassoon for Elizabeth, the cello for Zechariah, and the clarinet for Gabriel.

Beautifully recorded with professional musicians, the CD features the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, with Linda Mack conducting, the Phoenix Chamber Ensemble, conducted by John Pennington, and nationally recognized vocal soloists.

It's inspiring listening for Advent and Christmas and anytime we reflect on Christ's coming into the world as one of us. Includes 25 tracks totaling 60 minutes of music.
